Opening Weekend

Created on: 4/30/2006

Well, the first weekend of the season is almost over. Over all I'd say the fishing was pretty good. The weather was as good as I've ever seen for an opener, and this may have actually slowed certain areas down a bit.
The Twin Lakes showed with lots of fish in the 2 to 5 pound range, both from the shore and from boats, there were no double digit fish reported so far. It sounds like the best bet for action was with power bait or crawlers fished from the shore.
Bridgeport Reservoir didn't do all that great from the shore, only a few fish here and there reported until late Saturday evening when we had a couple 5lb browns come in. However, anglers fishing from boats did really well, both trolling and still fishing. We saw lots of browns in the 2 to 4 pound range, and lots of rainbows up to 6 3/4 pounds. Rapalas, Thomas Bouyants were good for trollers, and power bait and crawlers did the trick for the bait fishermen.
You're still going to have a 1/2 mile or so hike to Virginia Lakes, but the fishing has been great so far. Lots of nice rainbows being pulled through the ice both yesterday and today.
Because of the nice weather we've been having, lots of the streams are in run-off conditions. The flow on the East Walker was increased to 450 cfs Saturday morning, but the anglers that toughed it out still caught some fish. Everyone we talked to got in to at least a fish or two, with some anglers getting as many as 15. Sunday morning we also had anglers coming in for more flies because they were getting broken off by fish left and right. The main thing to do when the flow is at this level is be sure to use enough weight to get those flies down to the bottom!!!
We haven't had any news from Kirman yet, but we do know it is thawed out completely.
The Hunewill Pond fished great yesterday with 4 clients upset only because their arms were tired from landing so many fish.
Please stay tuned to this web site as now that the opener is past I should be able to make more time to fine tune the new programming on the site.
Thanks!!
