Fishing Report - Feb. 14, 2008

We’re still not getting a ton of angler reports from the river these days, but the ones we are getting are pretty good! It sounds like small midges like zebra midges, WD-40’s, flashback emergers and small caddis nymphs like z-wing caddis, fox’ poopah, swimming caddis and the like are doing the best these days. Several anglers have reported 20+ fish days. Talked to one angler that saw some fish rising on his way traveling down the highway, decided to make a quick stop and was able to land 6 fish between 16 and 20 inches in just over ½ an hour! Not too shabby! Todd Sceirine from the Sceirine Ranch on the Nevada side called and said the anchor ice is all gone on the Nevada side, and from what we’ve heard about the Cali side that is true as well. The weather has warmed up a bit from what it was a few weeks ago, still cold in the mornings, but if you plan on not being on the water until 9 or 10 am you shouldn’t be too uncomfortable.

On a little different note, some of you may remember Scott Freeman from a few years back. Scott worked here in the shop during the summer of 2005, and spent an incredible amount of time fishing the EW. The last few summers Scott has been fighting fires for the USFS in Shasta County and has been spending most of his fishing time steelheading up North. Anyway, Scott is planning on returning to the EW this Spring to get back into the guiding business. He’ll be working here in the shop this summer as well as guiding in the area. Scott is currently working on getting his Nevada guides license as well, so it looks like Ken’s will have a licensed guide available if you’re interested in fishing the Nevada side, either the Rosachi section or the Sceirine section. This will be a great opportunity for you learn some new water that typically isn’t as pressured as the Cali side. I’ll keep you informed as this opportunity progresses.

Artificial:
Type of synthetic bait rejected by a finicky fish because it is too large or too small, has the wrong shape or coloration, or makes the wrong motion in the water.
