The East Walker has been picking up pretty well the last few days. As far as the California side goes, the lake has thawed out almost completely and it seems that that has enabled the river to come up a few degrees over the last few days. This has of course helped the fishing out a great deal. Lots of fish are being caught in the 12 to 16 inch range, and there’s pretty good numbers of 18+ fish being caught as well. Down on the Nevada side, both the Sceirine and Rosachi are fishing really well. There was a good stone hatch a couple days ago and the dry fly fishing turned on for the day, this doesn’t necessarily happen every day, but now’s the time and you should be ready if it happens while you’re down there.
Patterns to be packing on the river include, Nori’s caddis, Fox’s poopah, silver streaks, San Juan worms, stimulators, micro stones, poxyback stones, Mercer’s midgeling, to name a few. One of the big things to do down there (as always) is if you’re fishing a rig that’s not producing, start switching up your flies and try to find out what they want to eat!
On a couple other notes, the Twin Lakes are thawed out, Bridgeport Lake is thawed out, I hear they’re working on the Virginia Lakes road to remove the snow for opener. I haven’t had time to make a run up to Kirman, but when I do I’ll let you know what the ice situation is up there.
barbless hook: Hook from which the reverse-angle edge has been removed that is favored by masochistic anglers who want their fishing to be completely, rather than mostly, pointless.
