May 10, 2008
Another week into the 2008 season and all seems to be going pretty well! I’d say a couple of the best spots have been Bridgeport Lake, East Walker River and Kirman Lake.
As for Bridgeport Lake, it’s been really hitting well the last few days, with lots of techniques. The trolling has been good with blades and crawlers, as well as small rapalas and trophy sticks. The bait fishing has been good with crawlers and power bait, mostly over in the Buckeye Bay and Rainbow point areas. Today we had some great reports on fly fishing over near Sandy Point in about 10 feet of water. They were midging under an indicator with shag shad or mini leeches and pt’s or zebra midges dropped off of that. They were into fish up to about 5.5 pounds all morning. It’s looking like the fly fishing on the lake is (hopefully) going to be on a roll now!!
The East Walker is still doing well mostly with small caddis nymphs and midges. We’ve had a few good reports on streamers, and here and there there’s been some decent dry fly action. For nymphs and midges it’s been z-wing caddis, fox’s poopah, buckskin caddis and swimming caddis, as well as red-headed stepchild, red tailwater tinies, zebra midges and pt’s. For streamers, JJ Specials, sculpzilla’s and zuddlers are all doing the job. In the dry market (when it happens) it’s been small bwo patterns or extended body bwo patterns. Also don’t count out the old parachute adams in about a size 18 or 20!
Kirman is doing really well for the cutts, most of which are running between 18 and 22 inches. They’ve been doing the best on small streamers like Stillwater nymphs and seal buggers (both Denny Rickards patterns). Haven’t heard much noise from the brookies lately, but the cutts are loud and clear.
The Virginias are still frozen, but I’d expect them to thaw within the next week or two.
