Fishing Report - May 17, 2008

Well, this past week has been really great around here! For starters, the East Walker is still kicking out lots of really nice fish, many in the 16 to 20 inch range. The caddis are getting lively and there’s been some decent dry fly fishing here and there. Mostly it’s (of course) been nymphing, small caddis patterns and midge patterns are the norm. Most anglers down there are getting in to quite a few fish each day. Patterns to consider include fox’s poopah, z-wing caddis, buckskin caddis, silver streaks, serendipity’s, micro mayflies. Not sure what the weather and/or water situations will bring throughout the summer, but the fishing is good right now so keep that in mind!

Bridgeport lake has been producing really well also. The shore fishermen have been doing great down near the dam with crawlers and power bait. Boat fishermen have been killing it both trolling and still fishing. Trollers are using small rapalas, blades and crawlers, or spoons like Thomas Bouyants, Bait folks are using crawlers and power bait. Fly anglers are starting to pick up some good fish either trolling streamers down near the dam, or midging out in front of the marina or in the Rainbow Point area. As the temps rise, the midging should just keep getting better. I was on the lake with Mundo of Stay Bent Guide Service on Thursday looking for perch (killer for fish tacos), we unfortunately weren’t able to find the perch, but we were able to catch and release 12 rainbow up to about 3.5 pounds and 3 browns up to about 3.5lbs. It was a great day even without fish tacos!

As of yesterday evening the Virginias were too slushy to walk on but not quite open enough to fish well. With the hot weather I’d expect it to be fishable within 2 or 3 days.

The West is a little high and muddy with the run-off finally starting, there are still fish being caught though. Just search out some of the calmer water and pitch some spinners and you should be able to get some action.

The Twins are also producing really well, lots of fish being caught trolling and bait fishing. Haven’t talked to many fly anglers up there but I’d bet a matuka or muddler would to the trick for some good action.

Kirman is still kicking out lots of nice cutts, mostly in the 18 to 22 inch, we heard about a couple brookies in the 19 inch range this week, but mostly cutts. Stillwater nymphs, seal buggers and the like seem to be the best things going.

Well, that’s about it, my fingers are getting tired, hope ya’ll have a good time on whatever water you’re fishing in this week!!!

Bluegill: 1) Tasty panfish often sought by ice fishermen. 2) Slang term for common condition usually suffered by ice fishermen.
