Fishing Report - June 25, 2008

Aside from some forest fire smoke settling in the valley from time to time all is well in the Bridgeport area. The East Walker is still fishing pretty well, though a little tougher than it was a couple weeks ago. It seems like the fish are a little tight lipped sometimes, I’d figure that’s probably because of the pressure. The upside is that there’s been some really good surface bites and dry/dropper bites. The caddis are coming off pretty well in the early morning and late evening, the sallies are starting to show themselves in the mornings, and there’s some huge mayflies coming off in the morning as well. Sometimes those browns aren’t liking them right on the surface, but all you need to do is drop an emerger off the back of a big fat elk hair caddis and that will usually do the trick. The nymphing is also holding out with mostly caddis patterns and midges. The Sceirine and Rosachi ranch sections on the Nevada side are also doing very well still, much less pressure down there. Had some great reports from the Sceirine on streamers over the weekend. Some patterns to try on the EW are: elk hair caddis, E/C caddis, crystal flash caddis, z-wing caddis, buckskin caddis, BH swimming caddis, disco midges, silver streaks, ice nymphs, wd-40’s. If you want to book the Sceirine ranch section, call well in advance as it’s been booking well past a week out lately.

Bridgeport Lake is still producing lots of nice fish, the midging has taken off pretty well and there’s some decent streamer action as well. For the fly anglers it’s been damsel patterns, callibaetis patterns and blood midge patterns. For the conventional tackle anglers either crawlers and/or power bait or gulp eggs, or trolling with small jointed rapalas in fire tiger or straight silver. There was a 1lb 13oz perch caught off of Rainbow point over the weekend, almost as big around as a dinner plate!

The Twins are also still producing well, slow trolling streamers has been productive, bait fishing with gulp eggs and crawlers, trolling with blades/dodgers and crawlers or small rapalas has also been doing well. We’ve been getting good reports from the backside of Lower Twin, and the road side of Upper Twin pretty consistently.

The Virginias are fishing great, as usual, lots of fish on bait as well as flies and lures. For bait it seems that orange, pink or red gulp eggs just can’t be beat, for lures it’s been Thomas bouyants and kastmasters, and for flies it’s been seal buggers, AP emergers, soft hackle pt’s, and beetles. Lots of fish, and great scenery, what could be better than that???

The West Walker is still running over 600 cfs, but is starting to fish pretty well. Drifting eggs through the pockets, as well as small spinners had been doing the best. The dry fly action hasn’t seem to pick up just yet, I’d expect that you’ll start seeing some good surface action when the flow drops down to the 300cfs range.

Haven’t heard much from Kirman lately, I’d expect it to still be good for the cutts with streamers and/or scud patterns. Lots of those cutts should be well over 20” by now up there. Bring a tube if you can as it will help you access much more water.

Camp: As used by anglers, a term denoting the place where the outboard motor broke and the cell phone ran out of power.
